Justice League

Justice League                                                                                                   November 22, 2017

The main battle was not in the movie Justice League rather it was between Marvel Comics and DC. Justice League was released about one week after Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok. The box office was no contest. To date Justice League has made about $286m worldwide while Thor has $742m worldwide with a budget of $180m. Justice League cost $300m and expectations are low for making for a profit. DC continues to lag Marvel.

Justice League’s strength are the characters, new and old. There is Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and new characters the Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg. These new characters will most likely have their own spin off films. Ben Affleck is Batman and his performance is as stiff as plaster board. Gal Gabot is tough and sweet with more meat on her. Ezra Miller is the Flash and is the most affable and humors character. Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) is Aquaman. Momoa plays Aquaman as a loner and a reluctant team member. Ray Fisher is Cyborg. He is the most serious and dour. Ray Fisher is a black actor and this seems to be the next DC/Marvel dual when Marvel releases Panther with a black cast.

The plot is unwieldy and disjointed. The arch villain is Steppenwolf played in motion capture which switching from live action to animated is a bit disconcerting. Steppenwolf comes back to earth to retrieve three magical mother boxes and the Justice League must stop him. To add more to the mix the Amazon’s are back. There is one silly scene where on of the mother box is rumbling back to life and the Amazons are pointing arrows and spears ready to attack a mystical mist.

Acting is not a high standard and the plot is muddled. If you are a fan of super heroes the introduction the Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg is very interesting. Rotten Tomato gave Justice League a 41 score and Thor a 92 score. In fairness they should both be adjusted. Thor in not Gone with the Wind and JL can be kicked up a few notches just for the characters.

Batman vs Superman Dawn of Justice

Batman vs Superman Dawn of Justice

This movie is confusing. The plot lines are like pick up sticks strewn about. Scenes appear to be helter skelter and transitioning is not obvious (no I did not fall asleep…I think). There is mayhem galore and a bit too violent for PG-13; I think the PG-13 was a push for the sake box office. Most of the movie is dark and violent. Except for two funny lines (which are in the trailer) the movie is basically humorless.

Henry Cavill reprises his Superman persona from the Man of Steel film. Good hearted as always and Clark Kent is still a nerd (but better dressed). Lois Lane as played by Amy Adams has a relationship with Superman.  My hope soared when there was a potent hot seen between Superman and Lois, but they kept their clothes on.

Ben Affleck’s Batman is grim. His battles with Superman and others were brutal. Batman wears bulky armor that resembles the Lego Batman. The biggest miscasting is Jeremy Irons as Bruce Wayne’s butler Alfred. Irons is devoid of humility and if you want a cup of coffee you better get it yourself.

Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luther was extremely annoying with his twitchy dialogue and piercing unnerving glares. His interpretation of the character is off the mark. Also Lex Luther with a mop of hair is anathema.

Wonder Woman is played by Gal Gadot, a former Miss Israel and super model. She played the sexy Brazilian cop in the Fast and the Furious movie. I have a problem, TV’s Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter (with her boom boom hips), is imprinted on my brain as the WW archetype.  Gadot makes a great model but is too thin to be a super hero; she has a credibility problem. A Subway sandwich has more meat on it than she does.

This movie is not terrible, just bad in places. The film is bullet proof, it has already broken box office records. It needs to clear $800m before it is in the black, which it will probably get. The challenge for the studios is selling the other lesser DC hero movies (including WW) which are coming soon. If you are part of the Fan base you will be forgiving of the movie’s short comings. Otherwise Downton Abbey is on demand.

The Man from Uncle

The Man from Uncle

In the early 60’s I use to faithfully watch the TV show The Man from U.N.C.L.E.. It was fun, the gadgets were great, the chicks were plentiful and trying to understand the heavy Russian accented voice of Lllya Kuryakin as uttered by a Scotsman was a challenge. The geopolitics of the Cold War were lost on a thirteen year old boy, but the Russian Missile Crisis scared the crap out of me.

The movie is set during the hot period of the Cold War. Our boys are trying to stop renegade Nazis’s from making a nuclear bomb. The USA and USSR work together with fingers crossed behind their back. The movie recreates the 60’s feeling with clothes, make up and cars. Most of the action takes place in Italy near Rome. Lots of Italian is spoken in the movie and large yellow subtitles are used, which are unnecessary for us native speakers.

The 2015 Man from Uncle movie has little to do with the TV show aside from using the same names for the protagonists. Henry Cavell is Napoleon Solo, played by Henry Cavill, who is proto Bond; very debonair and a chick magnet. Amie Hammer plays Lllya Kuryakin. Compared to the original petite T.V. actor, Armie looks like a refrigerator with shoes. Hugh Grant plays Waverly who is the movie’s equivalent of the incomparable Leo C. Carroll. Grant comes in at the tail end of the movie with his patented grin and effortless style. The villainesses is a tall glass of water named the Countessa Victoria Vinciguerra (which in English means “wina the war”). She wore so much eye make, raccoons were jealous. The Countessa looked like Twiggy only forty pounds heavier and twelve inches taller.  The heroine is Alicia Vikander who plays a key role as Gabriella Telller. Teller is cute, smart and the lynch pin of the operation. After many false starts there is a near kiss with the shy Kuryakin (regrettably there is absolutely no sex). In the credits I noticed t David Beckham played the projectionist. I had no idea he was in the movie. Sporting too many tattoos he blended in with wallpaper.

The actors were marvelous together. In the beginning there was that American Russian distrust which evolves into coexistence, but not quite friendship. This movie is hilarious. It is an action/comedy. The audience laughed out loud more than once. The director is Guy Ritchie who has this great talent for mixing violence and comedy (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and the Sherlock Holmes films). This is a simple movie with 1960’s sensibilities. It is fun, which is good enough.
